As evidenced by all of the T.V. commercials for denture adhesives, many adults are missing most, if not all, of their natural teeth. Periodontal disease, severe decay, and injury are just some of the reasons people seek dentures and dental services.
Without dental dentures, these situation can render a person a “dental cripple” – unable to chew food properly and embarrassed to be in the public eye because of a severely compromised appearance.
As a dentures dentist, I want all my patients to be comfortable and happy with the way they look and feel. Often dentures are the best solution – be they a complete denture which replaces all of one’s teeth or partial dentures which just replace some teeth. Even if you have lost all your teeth, you can again have a pleasant appearance and function normally with the help of dental dentures. Most of my patients don’t look like they are wearing them at all!
Most denture procedures require two steps. First I measure and make models of your jaw. A temporary denture will be placed and remain until your tissues have healed, which can take a month or two. When I am satisfied that your healing is completed, I will fit the permanent dental denture which has been designed specifically for your mouth.
New dentures may feel awkward for a while until you become accustomed to them. I am happy to see you in the office as many times as needed to make adjustments should you have irritation or soreness.
It takes a little bit of practice to get used to eating and speaking with your dentures. You always will need to be careful when you eat very hard foods or food with bones or shells, but before you know it, you can return to your usual diet. If speaking issues persist, I can make adjustments that will help you to talk normally again.
